The Centre for Plant Medicine Research (CPMR) was established in 1975 as a leading institution dedicated to the scientific research and development of plant-based medicines in Ghana. Operating under the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, the Centre has played a pivotal role in advancing traditional medicine through rigorous scientific validation, innovation, and policy support. Over the years, CPMR has earned recognition for its commitment to integrating herbal medicine into mainstream healthcare and promoting sustainable use of Ghana’s rich biodiversity.

The governance structure of the Centre includes a Governing Board responsible for strategic direction, policy oversight, and ensuring accountability in line with national regulations. The Executive Director serves as the administrative and operational head, supported by a team of researchers, pharmacists, scientists, and technical experts across various departments. These include phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, clinical research, and production units that collectively drive the Centre’s mandate.

The core stakeholders of the Centre extend beyond its internal scientific community to include traditional medical practitioners, academic institutions, regulatory bodies, and international research organizations. The Centre collaborates closely with universities, healthcare institutions, and global partners to promote research, training, and knowledge exchange in herbal medicine development.

Registered in accordance with Ghanaian statutory requirements, the Centre was established to address the gap between traditional medicine practices and scientific research. Prior to its formation, herbal medicine in Ghana lacked structured research, standardization, and quality control systems. Drawing from global best practices, CPMR was created to bridge this gap by providing evidence-based validation and ensuring safety, efficacy, and quality of plant medicines.

The Centre is widely respected for its ability to conduct cutting-edge research, develop standardized herbal products, and provide clinical services through its herbal clinic. It continues to support national development by promoting affordable healthcare alternatives and contributing to Ghana’s pharmaceutical and research landscape.

Looking ahead, CPMR aspires to be a centre of excellence and a global leader in plant medicine research. It aims to strengthen its role as a data-driven institution that informs policy, influences regulation, and advocates for the integration of traditional medicine into modern healthcare systems.
